B i o g r a p h y
Emma Phelps is a dynamic and passionate flutist and educator. She believes that music can lead people to a deeper understanding of themselves and the world and aspires to connect people to deeper emotions through artistic experiences.
Emma enjoys performing a range of repertoire from the Baroque works of J.S. Bach and the French works of Francis Poulenc, to the works of 20th/21st century composers like Aaron Copland and Ian Clarke. She also enjoys performing music outside of the classical scene, including Jazz, movie soundtracks, and pop tunes.
Emma was the winner of the 2021-2022 Concerto Competition at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater and performed the Hüe Fantaisie with the Symphony Orchestra. In March 2020, she performed with the UW-W Symphonic Wind Ensemble at Carnegie Hall. She has performed as a member of the UW-W Symphony Orchestra and Symphonic Wind Ensemble, and has performed as a substitute flutist with the Lake Geneva Symphony Orchestra. In addition to her ensemble work, she regularly performs throughout local areas at farmers markets and coffee shops.
She is active in her community and has held many leadership roles.
She was a Registration Intern for the 2022 National Flute Association Convention, as well as a Virtual Convention Intern for the 2021 Convention. She held the roles of President, Vice President, and Events Program Coordinator for the UW-W Flute Club and organized numerous clinics and events for the organization, including guest residencies with José Valentino Ruiz, Stephen Clark, Alexa Still, and Jim Walker, among others. She has also previously held roles of Secretary for UW-W Delta Omicron-Omicron Phi (2021-2022) and Special Events Chair for the UW-W Jazz Education Network (JEN, 2021-2022).
Emma earned her Master of Music in Flute Performance and a Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Musicology from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, where she studied with Dr. Erika Boysen. She received her Bachelor of Music in Flute Performance from the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, where she studied with Dr. Cristina Ballatori. She has also previously studied with Heather Zinninger and Jennifer Taylor. She has performed in masterclasses with Valerie Coleman and Jim Walker.
When she’s not performing or teaching, Emma enjoys reading, going on hikes, and spending time with her friends.
